Choices by Example

The joy of watching a child on an unmapped adventure is immeasurable. Too often we parents burden ourselves and our children with planning every moment of every day when all we need to do is to let things happen naturally. We are fortunate here in this country in that our landscapes are a plethora of exciting adventures and the good news—most of them are free.

So what do you say, pack up a picnic basket filled with all kinds of goodies, and remember to bring lots of water and spend a day at a county or national park. You can find the one nearest you simply by searching the good old internet. And here are a few tips to help you and your child get the most out of your adventure.

  1. Dress appropriately making sure to cover feet and legs to cut down on insect bites. You may want to use a natural insect repellant as mosquitoes and ticks are still very active during this time of the year.
  2. Pack a picnic of mini nutritious snacks and beverages in order to keep you and our child fueled throughout the day. Stay away from sodas and sugary drinks as these tend to dehydrate the body and provide very little in the way of nutrition.
  3. Leave all electronic devices at home with the exception of a cell phone and a camera. Remember to stay off the phone and use only in the case of an emergency.
  4. Take along nets and other gear to allow activities such as catching butterflies, tadpoles, etc.
  5. Encourage your child to keep a journal of what they discover and bring along a camera to allow them to capture photographs as a keepsake.
